Cartoon Network is 20 Years Old Today, October 1st, 2012
Well, what is there to say? What is quite possibly the greatest network ever to broadcast animated programs is 20 years old today. Since it’s creation in 1992, Cartoon Network has brought to us some of the most memorable shows to grace anyone’s childhood- Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed Edd ‘n Eddy, and so many more.
But they also instilled in their viewers a reverence to what came before- Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, Hanna-Barbera, Flintstones, Scooby Doo. In that regard, CN created a connection between the kids of the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s to the kids of the 90’s and 2000’s.
Cartoon Network was such a unique, distinct channel, as it truly was the only channel dedicated entirely to cartoons. Nickelodeon had more of a focus on kids in general, while Disney was dedicated obviously to Walt Disney and all his many creations. But unlike both those channels, CN had no live action programs, and the focus was on the cartoon stars. One thing I loved as a kid was seeing the bumpers and ads in between shows where they would show “behind the scenes” type moments with all the animated characters. You could see Quick Draw McGraw having lunch with Shaggy and Professor Utonium, or Bugs Bunny playing golf with Tom and Jerry.
There’s really not much else to say. Cartoon Network has always been a part of my life as I’m sure it has yours. Their characters and creators have inspired and influenced me in many ways over the past 20 years. I hope it’s around for 20 more years, and beyond.
Chime in with some of your CN Memories.
